Thoughts on Droppings
« on: January 18, 2016, 07:59:50 am »
So before I begin, these are, as aforementioned "thoughts". Just getting it out there and seeing what everyone in our little community thinks, lets not get all up in arms.

Right then, as stands when we die / get killed / become food for the previous generation, we drop things. This is good, else we would have no fear of death. What we drop, is our toolbar, which as I think about it, I find myself becoming less enamored by the idea. Personally, I'm swinging towards the "keep out tools, loose our pack" camp, as I feel it would encourage PvP and make PvZ more entertaining.

For the PvP and those who want to, it means that you can now carry everything you need in your toolbelt without fear, no losing that delicious sniper or that coruscant augur. BUT, and its a big but, you now have to prioritize, with only a limited amount of safe space, what do you REALLY want to keep safe. And for those getting raided, when you kill them, rather than another shotgun to add to the amassed pile, how about some ammo or several tanks of gas? How about killing them and getting your stuff back? Yup, no more raid, loot and die knowing you have their stuff, now you have to get out safely too.

And of course against zombies you can finally use that lovely gun you've been saving for the one special occasion that never seems to hapen, because your too scared to lose it, you ill however have to forfeit all that wood you've been hoarding.

Personally I think it would shake thinks up a little and make things more interesting, any thoughts?

I have played long term on several servers in the past that had Drop Backpack for PVP. The biggest issue that every server faced: Raider only brings 2 items with him to raid. Gun and Pile of ammo. He then hides a sleeping bag in the area. Attacks your base, you defend but everytime you kill him you get nothing of his. He respawns back nearby with his same gun and ammo. This cycle can continue for hours until the base owner has to log off or is just pissed and leaves.

By having the toolbelt drop, you are guaranteed to get whatever weapon the enemy raider is using to attack you if you kill him. Thus changing his style of attack next round or possibly scaring him off for that day.

I like the way it is now but could see advantages/disadvantages in both options.

Tool belt drop - Your backpack contents are safe. This leaves lots of secure storage for you to protect your precious items. However, it makes you think about pulling out your sniper or auger to use them knowing you might lose them.

Backpack drop - I could see how this might make for more PVP action. You wouldn't be afraid to engage an enemy if you knew your weapons would be safe. Also it might encourage you to attack someone you see out farming or looting to reap the rewards of their hard work.

Both drop - Not mentioned in this post(until now). I am not a huge fan of this. If you are out farming or looting and get killed you lose everything and have no way to fight back.

I guess for me I wouldn't complain if we went to backpack drop but I think the way it is now is fine too.

If we are wanting a change to encourage more PVP, then adjusting zombies to walk during the night would greatly increase tactics for PVP.  I could see a lot of night time base raiding, or traps set up.

These thoughts have all crossed my mind. The main thing that worries people about PvP is home invasion. Bases take so long to build and fortify that when it is violated players feel the need to wait for the next seed; starting over in moving is daunting and not fun.

Then comes losing their weapons etc. in a fight.

However, there needs to be a risk for PvP, so the toolbar and weapons remain.

You also fail to take into account one setting applies to all... the PvE players as well.I doubt they would want to drop the backpack contents.

Midnight Stranger said it best when he talked about players having empty backpacks because they knew they would lose nothing.

Having zombies walk at night would not encourage PvP; it would only make the game less challenging or not challenging. PvPers do not stress zombies running at night; in fact, I use it to my advantage and do most of positioning at night.

Every time I play (usually on PVE type servers) the setting is usually drop all. It seems more realistic, and it gives even the PVE players more incentive to either "chop that tree fully or run" mentality

You will need to prioritize that extra 200 wood, or your stuff. It is easy enough to craft a stone ax and wood club for defending self in a full on zed walking horde.

Just a greenhorn's opinion, that's all.

Won't happen here mate.

Number of reasons I won't do this; one is that this game is Alpha and has bugs which can cause players deaths not due to their own fault. I don't want them losing everything or having to run an inordinate distance due to something beyond their control.

I understand where the comment about other servers comes from and you should know that without meaning offense...it is irrelevant what other servers do.

I have worked on a balance between ez-mode and "****" and while I may tweak it now and then; I do not lean in favor of either side.

The server will accommodate all play styles.

Perhaps a time will come when I  have more control over settings in different regions or we get PvP "flags", PvP zones...until then this is how I operate.
