Server #1 - Difficulty Setting
« on: November 15, 2019, 11:58:52 am »
Previous to this new seed, server #1 was set to level 3 difficulty.  Due to an overwhelming desire by most players to increase difficulty, it was raised to level 5 for the first day of this new seed and then decreased to level 4 on day two, where it has remained since.

The second server is still set to level 3 and will remain at that setting.  This poll is to determine if we continue to keep server #1 set at level 4 difficulty or, if we increase it even further to level 5.  This poll will remain up for the weekend and then in true democratic fashion, the choice with the most votes will prevail.  Those that desire an easier setting can find that on the second server.  It is a clone of the main server so it has everything else the server #1 has, including the same map.

I vote Difficulty 5!

Reasons are simply opinions:
1)  Zombies should be threatening always especially in greater numbers.  Face rolling zombies causes my interest to wane over time.
2)  Zombies defend the POI loot everyone wants!  The guardians of da loot should significantly slow down players from getting what they want.  Sure the nerd poles and jetpackers will still exist but they're skipping over zombies anyway, so shouldn't affect them much!
3)  Threat to home base / horde bases.   While builders love building and making grand bases, once they've built their piece de resistance, they might go and build something else, or enjoy defending their base against sexy hard zombies!
4)  Loot becomes slightly more scarce and causes supply to go down, thus boosting the in game demand via dukes.  One thing is for sure, the longer the seed lasts, the more people will have everything they've wanted, and could cause interest to wane.
5)  Survival!  Surviving is such a great reward, and what greater reward is there than surviving against the highest difficulty threat?

I've had my fair share of deaths, and I'd wager I'd never have a seed where I go with zero deaths - but this seed's difficulty vs last seed's difficulty are night and day!  Last seed everyone had everything and there were several player shops selling all the same high level stuff.  Granted, I joined a bit later, it was kind of a put off that I could do a few quests and buy pretty much everything I needed.

Difficulty will increase the fun value for looters, increase the value of items looted due to limiting the supply in the player markets(unless everyone is a pro), adds a little spice and danger to the builder lifestyle when a screamer or wandering horde appears.

Doesn't really matter imo.  It just means you get more deaths right off the bat, but after you get some levels under your belt a level 1 is about as easy as a level 5, just with more ammo.  I died twice already and I pride myself on getting no deaths, not realizing that the difficulty was set high when I joined!  My fault for not checking!  So yeah, a couple early deaths and you hit a point where it's trivial no matter what the difficulty is.

With the increased ammo amount, I'd say 5 is cool with me. I'd always prefer a challenge to an easy cakewalk.  8)

My concern for having the highest difficulty setting is horde night.  Horde night itself is already fairly difficult.  If your tactic for horde night is to cheese with pathing bugs or logging off, you shouldn't be voting for the highest difficulty as nothing will make it a challenge.

im kindof conflicted  on this i dont want to stop any one from playing how they like but im not in favor of making it harder  its become quite challenging to me and since im  a donor  i dont want to go to server  2 and get kicked   ..... idk im not trying to be a debbie downer but i cant seem to complete missions any more cause every time i go do  one some random screamer  comes in and  calls a mass and i get  destroyed so in all honest id like it to go back to 3 how it was last map

This server is Madman's server.  His server, his rules.  He can run it as he sees fit period.  I see a fair amount of complaining on settings, game issues and attempts to make the server the way an individual player wants it to be.  To me this is not respectful of his investment of time and resources in making available the best 7 days to die server out there (I see a lot people making a point when they are frustrated with issues to say they are not placing blame on Madman or the admins and that is good).

However in this instance Madman has asked all the players for their feedback on the question of difficulty settings.  So the comments that follow are not intended to be criticism but rather an effort to present my opinion on the question.

Personally I prefer the difficulty to be less than 5.  Having a chance to play on both settings was a good idea as it made it clear to me that there is clear difference to me in how much I enjoy playing on the lower setting vrs difficulty 5.  I would not have thought it would have made that much difference but it does to me.

I don't enjoy getting the crap kicked out of me every time I enter a POI to loot.  I don't enjoy barely surviving and having my game play suppressed by Ferrals while i'm trying to survive with basic gear.  I don't find satisfaction dying over and over in an extremely difficult struggle... some struggle sure.  I only have so much time to play and I prefer my play to be at least somewhat casual.

I acknowledge there are those who do enjoy the struggle on difficulty 5.  I respect that (more power to you) and I don't think those players should have to play on difficulty 1 just because another player prefers that setting.  Likewise I don't think players should be forced to play on difficulty 5.  There are so many different play styles that it would be difficult to make accommodations for all.  For that reason I believe in a large group setting such as game servers extremes should be avoided.  No difficulty 1 and no difficulty 5.  Personally I would choose difficulty 4 but could also enjoy 3.

Two severs at two different settings seems a reasonable solution but as mentioned by a previous poster, making the donor server diff 5 and server two a lower setting is not a perfect solution as there are some donors and may be potential donors who will not find the harder setting playable. Unfortunately there is no easy one size fits all solution so we are back to reasonable compromise IMO.

If we set an extreme setting on the only server that reserves donor slots then perhaps it should be current donors who vote on that setting.  If it is the general population voting then perhaps that setting should be on the non reserve server.  Perhaps we need to split reserve slots between both servers (15 per server for example).  Just a thought good/bad.

Again just my opinion and preference and they should only carry the weight of such.  I am committed to playing on GZ.

This a excellent server and I truly do appreciate all the efforts that go into making is such by Madman and the admins (those currently serving and those who served in the past).  We all reap the benefits of Your efforts.

I am also in agreement with making it level 5. I was thrilled to have a challenge on the first day. It brought the danger and excitement of looting and not being out alone all night. I was just mentioning to my friends on the game how i almost never die now that the zombies arent prevalent. Well I died the first day, and I was happy about it. I realize it has been 4 since the second day, but horde nights are already more fun than they were previously because of the increased difficulty and I think level 5 will finally bring meaning to them.

Everyone was sent an email and several announcements were made in discord.  I was hoping for more votes but it is what it is.

Anyway, the results are clear.  Difficulty level 5 was the winner.  So, server #1 has been set to 5.

I will let it stay at this level until next weekend and then have another vote.  I think a full week of level 5 difficulty will be enough time to see if this is really what most of you want.
