Personally my playstyle is as follows:

I really enjoy the new start and trying to make do quickly without anything - kinda exciting

Then i like to get creative with creating my base as i love the design aspect of the game - get settle and comfortable and bored - then i am down for PVP which would mean moving my base south i believe unless the rules have been altered?  Sorry dont spend a lot of time ont he forum as my time is limited to begin with

I like the idea of PVP cites and the anticipation that goes with it

This would change as well.

Currently PVE players cannot land claim certain POIS. If cities became PVP they would them be open to PVE players land-claiming them, wherever the city was. This includes special POIs in the city.

So we would be back to almost where we were before if you take over a poi you opened up to raiding. Are player made chest safe or can you just loot game spawn chest in the poi.

But after thinking about it today and with this ill give it a try. In fact ill will take over a poi in a north city once I find one I will post quadrants if any pveer wants to try out pvp or see whats it like to loot a player hostile area that will be a known area.

I offer any pvper who whants to help with this experiment is more then welcome.

And well see if the ones who prefer pve will try it out and if they do see if they like it.

Just give me some warning so I can find a spot. It will be close to GZ.

  What do you ya think.

Now if any pvpers would like to help to try to get pvers feet wet in pvp are more then welcomed.

Great! mman and smakall, as well as hodgejay, and karnage are trying PVP.

But for the record, I have not made all cities PVP yet. I want to give time for discussion and let people try PVP out before I think about implementing a server change.

Ideally I am thinking to see what A13 does, or if we get 12.6 or such try it out before A13

Sorry I haven't voted yet simply because I'm not sure how to vote (yet)

How about Stop signs but the other way around so you have certain areas in the north that are PVP

Another thought I had was having tournaments or challenges in the south with grand prizes
You could even settle PVE killing issues with that - put the two parties in a death match

Would it make sense to open up POIs in the north for claiming that way you might want to live closer to the south ( but I guess that would penalize PVE players)

I'm not sure what your abilities ar as admin but could you make GZ bigger and put more POIs in?

Tourneys dont really offer the same dynamic, the whole map is one big hunger games if its pvp the way I think about it. It's definitely a good idea worth trying, and we did. It was fun for the 4 that showed up once. There also has to be prefab editors up to date with the game as I cannot simply just add prefabs easily without it.

I could make GZ *bigger* but didn't want to mess with Random Gen 3.0 too much, have to see how it affects game balance and dynamic. I feel the answer isn't necessarily to automatically revert to old maps but instead see how they work, how players move, where they build, and what I can do off of what the developers did.

And as far as incentive people, we dooo have the bounty system. There is 1k coin on my head right now as a bounty. compared to 1coin for a zombie!

as far as voting, it's just the poll at the top of this thread.

I've given this a bit of thought came up with this.
A) the primary reason I dont PVP is that getting to the south is simply too much of a pain after going so far from GZ.
B) the risks of PVP outweigh the benefit.

My potential solution would be to change the PVP zone from north/south to middle and outer, ie anything beyond say 5000 would be PVP in any direction. This would cause the bases to be closer together---ish and if you want to find that untouched car you'll be forced into PVP. The 2nd part would be to add a reward system to killing a player. So if you nail someone perhaps you get a free crate or something. That adds a motive to PVP aside from just a tick mark on your stats.

I know the coding doesn't lend to easily doing this but if the good loot were in the PVP zone and the mediocre stuff in was in the PVE that might help too.
surely you jest

I don't want to change the 0,0 line.

I agree about having to travel too far to PVP...so I think cities will help that. I feel I have so many custom recipes/paths combined with the fact you do not need to go to a city to find a POI or loot that making cities PVP will add what you mentioned. Making the possibility of PVP closer to you. Doesn't mean you have to partake, odds are you won't find action there anyway. I know I certainly won't go 10k north just to hope someone enters a city. Looking for PVP means staying south primarily.

But it does mean it adds the element of danger, and a PVP player could choose to bunker north. All they could do though, is guard that city. Could make for interesting excursions as one player/faction travels from their base to a city to attack.

I have been rewarding PVP. I wanted to make it so players dropped unique items, but game isn't working with me so far (it may not be do-able currently). Nothing exists as far as player kill points.

We DO have a bounty system, so killing h0tr0d for an example nets 1000zcoins. And so far I have been giving rewards to anyone who engages in a PVP battle.

Very fair points and I am all for making the cities PVP, just throwing in some ideas. The dropping of goodies on player kills  is a really good idea..I like it.

Sounds good to me.  I have concerns about the already in place rules regarding pvp/pve and if they will also apply to cities, and how that is going to complicate everything, but it sounds interesting.

concerns? Nothing will be complicated.

Cities are all PVp.
anything that touches 0 latitude or south of that is pvp.

On the PvE side, no claiming of special stores as outlined earlier in my Claiming POIS post. UNLESS theyre in a city, of course.

NO unnecessary damage/griefing/being a jerk.

I'm late to the post and a decision was made (and to be honest I did not read page 2 of posts :P)  but wanted to offer my input on 2 points:

1)  Pfuath asked (when I hit the Quote button my browser locked up and went nowhere so copy and paste it is)

I'm curious, from the perspective of the PVE folks: why do you choose to play on this server? What does the PVP side offer you? There are tons of PVE-only servers. (I mean this as a legitimate curiosity, not some sort of insult or dig at PVE players - I'm curious what your perspectives are)

Well as a PVE'er I shall place this out there.... What is the point of PVP?  To see who is better that who.  Now please don't get all "I ain't like that!"  It is about the adrenal of the hunt, the can I out smart this player, will they go left or right, can I get in front of them, and in the rawest forms of it all it is a pi**ing match.

Don't get me wrong I get it.  I play CS:GO and I'll trash talk when I'm on a hot streak and have lots of stars by my name!! However there is a MAJOR difference about the PVP in GO and the PVP in a game like 7DtD.  Possessions.  Again please don't get me wrong I get it if you kill that player that you have had a 5 min shootout with, you want all the good lootz!!!! As a player I don't want to lose all my good lootz.  Again I'm boiling it down to the bottom most point of it being a pi**ing match of who is better than who and hey I want all my lootz!  And I get it there should be a reward of hey I took this risk I get the reward.

So back to Pfuath's question Why did you pick this server??  Well for me I'm ok with people playing like that if they are ok with me playing like I play.... Which is I want to keep all my lootz!

Then play on a all PVE server!!!  Well yes I could... and that is boring because it is full of kids playing and having their own pi**ing contests of "My build is better than yours!!"

There is also another reason, a buddy and I were playing Nazgane and we had fun, till at one point it became beyond trivial.  We had a huge base set up and were not scared of even a 7 day hoard.  Now this was in 10 and 11.  We did not have the issues that I read about where there were no hoards spawning, as we had hoards spawning.... they just were too easy, so we thought of upping the ante and that is why I sought out a public server.

Now for my second point.

PVP as if have stated above is about "Who is better than who",  however there are other factors that need to be taken into account.  The biggest of these would by far be "Lag".  Please don't think I'm claiming every death I have in a game on lag...... I'm saying that any player could have a lag spike and that cost them their life.... again that is part of the risk in PVP and you PVP'ers get that.

Those of us that are PVE'ers also have to deal with that Lag when fighting the Zed's.  Now with that being said we can adjust for it.  IE I know that if I'm not 10m away from a Zed when they swing I will get hit.  ANNOYING but again it gets chalked up to Lag, but we can adjust to it and accept those Risks when engaging Zed's.

In collusion of my post (finally he is going to shut up ;) ).  What has been decided has been decided and I'm not trying to change that.  I was trying to answer a question posed to PVE'ers as I am one, and try to explain why I chose PVE and not PVP here in this game when I have commented that I do play PVP games.

Thanks for reading this novel,

Dev

Also, in response to Pfuath:

I tried a pve server and was completely turned off by the players after I told a little joke and 2 of the players got way too offended.  One of the players started complaining about the crickets on one game evening and I said that maybe he could hunt them down and shut em up.  Two of the players got all bent out of shape, so I left.  I came to this server thinking that the pve/pvp combination might attract a more mature crowd.  Whether that's true or not it is exactly what I've found.  Now I am not a pvp player but I like the idea of dabbling with it a little from time to time but I'd say that the reason I play on this server is because I have found a community that I can get along with and when I find something that works I generally don't change it.

I don't want to force anyone to PvP, but I want to liven things up some. I also want people to see PvP--if you choose to try it--doesn't have to be a bad experience like many have had on other servers.

(Edit: I wrote the following response then just realized when you say cities, are we only talking about the ones that have the rubble for ground or including the towns that have regular houses? If it's just the ones with rubble that are full of dogs you can make those PVP all day. I just like my peaceful towns.)

As a fellow hermit MPer, (Dev22 can totally be my new keep-10-houses-away-from-me neighbor :) ) I like the PVE/PVP split for the same loot related reasons as others.  There's a lot of games and little play time out there so I don't get much on here anymore. I like the little bit to be productive and not spent looting all the time to replace my stuff when I get shot not paying attention reading a book in town. If every city is PVP then it's always KOS especially when you can't read name tags from far away. I take all my good stuff off and go in with junk because I'm not about to lose my rare-to-me stuff in a pissing match I didn't want to really be in. At least in the north if I loot when we're in the same city by coincidence, tough. First come, first serve.

Why be a hermit on MP? I like the game to feel realistic and alive unlike lonely SP. I believe there would be a wasteland of you heathens in the south shooting each other while we folks in the north try to get on with life like it was before the apocalypse ;D. Watching people progress at their own pace and do their own thing is the part I like. Including watching some of you off each other for fun without everyone having to be involved. I enjoy seeing the new player made buildings sprouting up once in a while showing life when I cross the map (I live in prefabs so I don't need that competition next door). I like to run into someone in my town and be excited to see another player because it's been so long. Sometimes a pleasant, unexpected social interaction is better than finding a good item when it's been 2 real life weeks since you saw a person in game.

But, I mainly prefer to be alone because of the time issue. When you have neighbors that have the time to loot all the surrounding POIs, you either have to go way out to earn your own or group up and share with your great lack of contribution. I work a shift opposite to kids' school schedules so I'm on at different times all year, mostly after midnite when only 1 or 2 other ppl are on. So grouping up is not great for me either. I imagine the perk system will get me back into more coop when specialized skills will matter.

tl;dr - I would probably enjoy PVP if we maybe did a one side VS the other OR community in a medium area VS an anarchy free-for-all outlying area.
